In case your emergency first aid knowledge consists only from what you have seen during an episode from The Office and you can’t stop humming the tune of “Stayin’ Alive”, then ESN Lithuania has a perfect solution together with ESN LSMU - Go Xtreme!

Thanks to Viruthan Yoga-Nathan, who was the main organizer of the event, and his team, people from multiple Lithuanian universities were able to learn valuable information.

This is the third time ESN LSMU has provided the network with this intense one-day event. This time it took place on the 8th of December and covered everything from the recovery position, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to the best ways how to call an ambulance and properly respond to emergency first aid related issues.

The participants were taught by Laurynas Ivanauskas, who is a member of the department of disaster medicine and has also been working for the emergency disaster response team in Kaunas. As someone who has worked for 18 years in the firefighter department and been involved in the activities of a team responsible for dealing with earthquakes, collapses, and other disasters, he was able to perfectly teach the participants.

However, the trainer started by explaining that “medicine students study for 6 years, and today we will try to learn everything in 6 hours”.

Members of various sections of ESN Lithuania tried everything in practice with the help of CPR training manikins, automated external defibrillators, bandages and many more tools that the general public could use when needed. The melody of the famous song by Bee Gees was still in the air during the training of resuscitation, but the participants actually spent time learning the best ways and tricks to help people.

According to the trainer, if a member of the public calls the ambulance and then does nothing, then it might be too late. Multiple participants admitted that they do not think that they have enough knowledge about emergency first aid events, therefore, Go Xtreme was a perfect opportunity for them.

Moreover, Laurynas Ivanauskas found a perfect way to always lighten the mood. The emergence number here is 112, but almost everyone knows the famous 911 from the United States of America. Ever wondered what happens when someone calls 991 in Lithuania? The trainer quickly showed that it is automatically connected to the Lithuanian number and has sent greetings to a friendly dispatcher after explaining that a training is happening and there is no emergency situation during the call.

He ended the training by explaining that a lot of people get in panic mode and freeze during real situations. Therefore, if you act and help, then you truly are a hero. Want to learn how to be one? Participate in Go Xtreme and find out!

16th of February 1918. 20 members of Council of Lithuania sign a document. It announces the restoration of independent state of Lithuania, severing all governing connections with other countries, and proclaiming that newly re-established state will be regulated by democratic principles.

Little did they know that after 100 years, another world war, after country and its parts being ruled by several nations, Lithuanians will be celebrating this date as one of the most important in their history.

The Act of February 16th united people who were fighting for free and independent Lithuania. And today we are celebrating it as our day of Independence and a 100th birthday of our modern democratic country.

We appreciate this freedom. Living in Lithuania or abroad, studying or working, you never forget where you come from. And you feel immensely proud of your roots when you share them with others. And that’s what we as ESNers do quite well.

When most people think about ESN, they think about volunteers taking care of international students. Organization encouraging mobility. But it’s more than that.

We explain incoming international students why we eat 12 dishes on Christmas Eve and tell them that not a bunny, but the Easter granny brings us chocolates on the most important spring holiday. We explain why our most unique national soup is pink. We encourage them (or politely insist) to try our other national dishes. Today we will be telling about our history and perhaps for the nth time explaining why we have not one but two independence days.

As ESN Lithuania volunteers, we constantly represent Lithuania in international events. Be it bringing some Lithuanian food to Euro dinners, speaking about their home universities and towns during their own exchange studies, presenting country and its culture in mobility fairs, flag parades, mobility conferences or other events all over Europe and beyond. And we will continue to do so.

We are proud of our country. We are grateful for its freedom. And we are extremely happy to say “Su gimtadieniu, Lietuva” today.

'Don't be a thingist,' said Erasmus Student Network Lithuania in December 2017 and encouraged exchange students studying in Lithuania to donate various goods for an honourable cause.

Leaving country and leaving things

After a long autumn semester buying clothes, kitchen utensils and books to make their rooms and flats in Lithuania a little bit more like home, international students had a chance to make a good use of their things by donating them to those who really need.

Before leaving Lithuania and going home, students were donating things they wont be using anymore or taking back to their countries. Students mostly donated clothes and shoes. Kitchen and home utensils like cups, kettles, pans and cutlery were a common donation as well.

Initiative came from students

ESN Lithuania came up with the idea to gather and later on donate things from Erasmus and exchange students because all volunteers of the network saw how many things students leave when they departure from Lithuania after their exchange semester. Moreover, students themselves were often asking where they could leave things they don't need, as throwing them away after using only a couple of months seemed like a waste.

Social campaign Don't be a thingist was running for both spring and autumn semesters in 2017. Both times it engaged students from more than 6 higher education institutions in 2 cities.

Big universities and small colleges alike gathered many good quality items for people who cannot afford them. With the help of platform www.aukokdaiktus.lt, the donated goods  reached people in Vilnius and Kaunas.

ESN Lithuania and www.aukokdaiktus.lt started their partnership in 2012 and since then organized a couple of similar social campaigns.

Not the only social campaign

Don't be a thingist was organized as a part of the project SocialErasmus by Erasmus Student Network. The project is encouraging international students not only to explore the culture and country they are studying at but also to leave a piece of them in it by helping those in need or getting involved in various volunteering activities.

The project, as well as the Don't be a thingist campaign is continuously getting more awareness and attracting more students. Thus, the events will continue upcoming semester. International students can join Social Inclusion days, together with ESN volunteers visit various animal shelters and centres of people with disabilities, enrich local community by volunteering for different causes, and, again, before they leave, donate things to others.

Local students are also very welcome to join SocialErasmus events and volunteer. More information and news about the events can be found on ESN Lithuania Facebook page.
